MARY SIBANDE

Queen Sophie's Alter Ego Art

A COMING OF AGE JOURNEY in originally wanting a career as a fashion designer, being raised relatively middle class in apartheid South Africa, and while navigating family and societal dynamics created a unique and engaging artist. Mary Sibande represents new wave and innovative artistic qualities of a multiplying generation of artists across Africa's continent. Sibande attempts no visual pretense about symbolism and the representation of any African woman in her sculptures, paintings and photographs. She even embodies the alter ego of a subversive domestic worker named Sofie that artistically reminds viewers of her nation's tortured legacy of apartheid oppression, as linked to the domestic work of her own mother. Most of her works are sculptured or constructed, yet they visually feel animated. If dramas or operas were sculptured, Sibande's work would be the final product —as she is equally the author, director and producer of this art. Fine art audiences should expect to see Mary Sibande's artworks evolve and engage us as stories telling a mosaic of untold truths about the authentic, contemporary, intergenerational, and even metaphorical experiences of South African women — before, during and long after apartheid — from working class to their regal essence.
