The Versatile Genius Among Us

TRUE ARTISTIC VERSATILITY by an authentic artist is rare within any generation. Exhibiting genuine genius is yet another paradigm most will never experience and many of us don't easily recognize. In the case of Sanford Biggers, that creative bridge was crossed years ago after first getting educated at both Morehouse and Spelman Colleges. Though the latter institution was created to academically empower Afromerican women, it was where Biggers had to acquire his initial fine arts education because it had the closest available art major classes. This California-born creative straddles the spectrum of artworks that speak subtle and direct truths in a matrix of culture, politics, economics, history and current events — exceptionally across the artistic disciplines of painting, sculpting, quilting, cinema, multimedia, and the musicianship of the Harlem-based creator. In addition to numerous artist awards, Biggers also earned a 2017 Rome Prize in Visual Arts, a 2019 induction into the New York Foundation for the Arts Hall of Fame, a 2020 Guggenheim Fellowship, and the 2021 de:FINE ART Award from SCAD (Savannah State College of Art and Design). He is currently a 2021-2022 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Visiting Professor and Scholar in the MIT Department of Architecture.
