Paris Is Still The Place

For Your Travel Dollars

IN THE 27 COUNTRIES that are the European Union, France is considered the top arts and culture destination for most. The French capital of Paris is the favorite trip of many. In particular, Afromericans have been making the journey over the last 150 years. France attracted Frederick Douglass in the 1800s, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Joséphine Baker in the 1920s, then James Baldwin, artists Barbara Chase-RiboudBeauford DelaneyNina SimoneLenny Kravitz, as well as renown authors Jake Lamar and Ta-Nehisi Coates. For nearly 200 years, Paris has been the top European city of choice for countless numbers of famous and average Afromerican travelers.

HOWEVER, 22 YEARS into our 21st century, what does Paris and the rest of France have to offer COVID rules weary tourists after months of lockdowns? The answer is simple — far more than what you can imagine even from a full 7-day visit. Visitors will notice the high French respect and attention to culture, the arts and creativity, even beyond its over 130 museums just in Paris. Strolling along any street (rue) of so many neighborhood pastry shops (patisserie) will give you a strong visual and scented sense of the French attention to detail even with conceiving and creating foods.

FRENCH PRESIDENT Emmanuel Macron's groundbreaking  national honor for Joséphine Baker in the famous Panthéon is part of a long, socially complex and extensive Afromerican history, arts, and cultural links to France.  A very key fact to note: Baker is the first and only person of American descent ever given this honor. This will be underscored by your own Paris visit and conversations. Knowing some French is very helpful, but not entirely necessary for many English capable Parisians. Moreover, for most Afromericans living in Louisiana — especially New Orleans — there will be many obvious historical and cultural connections. As a tourist, your 7-hour flight across the Atlantic is well worth discovering a much fuller and still expanding spectrum of the French and Afromerican cultural, arts, and social legacy. DM   VIDEO
